A majority of young US adults say they don't trust the people building AI - and the numbers behind that claim are starker than the usual 'public skepticism' framing suggests. CNBC's Generation Lab surveyed over 1,000 US adults aged 18 to 34, and trust in nine major AI company executives came back described as 'dismal': 81 percent chose 'don't trust' when asked who they trust to act responsibly on AI. Peter Thiel scored worst at 79 percent distrust, followed by Mark Zuckerberg at 71, Elon Musk at 70, and Sam Altman at 69.
What The Numbers Actually Show
The distrust headline is the eye-catching part, but the policy preferences buried in the same survey are arguably more consequential. Forty-five percent of respondents fear AI will have a negative effect on their careers. Forty percent believe the US government should regulate AI. And sixty percent want the tech industry's data center construction drive to slow down.
That last figure deserves more attention than it's getting. Data centers are the physical footprint of the AI buildout - the power draw, the land, the grid strain that people experience locally regardless of what they think about chatbots. When six in ten young adults say slow down, that's not abstract anxiety about a future technology; it's a reaction to construction happening now, in visible, measurable ways.

Distrust without exit or leverage is a stable condition - companies can absorb it indefinitely as long as usage holds.
It's also worth noting what a survey of 18-34 year olds can and can't support. This is one age cohort in one country, self-reported sentiment rather than observed behavior. The findings are real as a measurement of mood; treating them as a prediction of market or political outcomes would be overreach.
What This Actually Points To
The real story here isn't that young people dislike tech executives - sentiment toward tech giants has been shifting negatively for years over data privacy, platform decay, and democracy erosion. What's notable is that the distrust now attaches specifically to AI leadership while the industry's response remains essentially unchanged: keep building, keep shipping, treat public concern as an externality.
Sixty percent wanting slower data center construction is where sentiment and material interest actually collide. That's not a preference that can be routed around with better product design; it intersects with zoning, permitting, utility regulation, and local politics - places where public opinion has teeth even when consumer choice doesn't. If I read this correctly, the pressure point for AI accountability won't be model evaluations or voluntary safety commitments. It will be infrastructure fights at the county level, where 'we need more compute' has to argue against people who already said no.
